offered in hospitals and rehab centers. Neuropsych is also offered, but the services for each of these therapies is limited. So what do folks do who still have needs? On this show, Julie Kintz, brain-injury survivor, focused on the needs of the brain-injured.

Julie spoke about the “Clubhouse” model, which provides a safe haven for those who live with mental illness after brain injury.

Julie is now working on developing her own “clubhouse, ” which will cater to folks who live with any sort of brain injury.

Zachary Stilwell, a member of the Carriage House Clubhouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana, stopped by to share his exuberant thoughts about his experiences with the clubhouse, too.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that many people experience who are involved in traumatic events, such as physical or sexual assaults, traffic accidents, or any life-threatening traumas. PTSD is also often experienced by those who may witness a traumatic event. For Folks living with brain injury are often affected with PTSD.  PTSD is also common among troops returning from war with what was once called battle-fatigue or shell-shock.

My panel, Lisa Dryer and Julie Kintz, both who live and cope with PTSD, joined me to discuss this topic. We hope to shed some light on what PTSD is and how survivors can cope with it. They each offer suggestions that work for them.

Julie Kintz Survivor Panel 070515When Julie Kintz‘s car went off a cliff in California in 1991, she got a brain injury. Julie is a former Brain Injury Radio Network host.

Juliet Madsen UniformTroop, Juliet Madsen, got her brain injury while serving her country in Iraq. Juliet is a member of the Board of Directors of R4 Alliance and is a master quilter. You can see some of her work at “Stroke of Luck Quilting.”

Catherine (Cat) Brubaker, Julie Kintz, and Juliet Madsen join host Donna O’Donnell Figurski to discuss the many problems that surround their lives as brain injury survivors who look “normal.”

People easily understand the implications arising when someone suffers a broken limb or is diagnosed with cancer or is physically disabled. But, when someone is living with an “invisible” brain injury, folks find it difficult to comprehend. They don’t understand the seriousness of memory loss, confusion, lack of organizational skills, bursts of anger, or lack of emotions. “Get over it!” “That happens to me too,” and “Oh, I know what you mean….” are some of the phrases that are commonly heard by brain injury survivors, and they’re infuriating. Such a phrase is a big, red flag that shouts that the friend, family member, or loved one simply does not understand what his or her survivor is going through. Cat, Julie, and Juliet will address this topic. They hope to help others understand more clearly what it means to live with a brain injury while looking “normal.”

Due to a prior engagement, I was unable to host my show, Another Fork in the Road on the Brain Injury Radio Network on October 19, 2014. Fortunately for me and all my listeners, Julie Kintz of Quantum Leap stepped into her host shoes and interviewed a very interesting guest. Mark Ittleman, a speech and language pathologist, spoke of the many difficulties brain-injured survivors encounter after their injury. I will be back on November 2nd with Dr. David Figurski, (my spouse) who will give his perspective of his life as he conquers traumatic brain injury.

Mark explained his philosophy of therapy (it should be doable, interesting, and enjoyable), his methods (analysis, repetition, and modeling), and his strong desire to involve the caregiver (by his or her presence in the sessions, by learning from him, and by his writing simple-to-understand books – he’s working on one now). Mark cautioned survivors to get more than one prognosis because a prognosis is only a doctor’s opinion and because survivors are often more capable than people realize. Mark understands the power of the ability to communicate and suggested that survivors – even years after their trauma – can benefit from having a speech therapist.

(August 31, 2014, November 30, 2014, March 29 2015, May 31, 2015, August 30, 2015, and November 29, 2015) Join Julie Sharp Kintz and me (Donna O’Donnell Figurski) in “Another Quantum Leap on the Road” as we explore topics directly related to Traumatic Brain Injury.

The topic for August 31, 2014 delved into how “Life Changes After TBI” from the viewpoints of both survivor (Julie) and caregiver (me).

It was a great show and a great discussion. Some of the topics we covered were:

images-1I was surprised when I got a Private Message from one of the Brain Injury Radio Network hosts one evening while I was browsing through the many Traumatic Brain Injury sites that I belong to on Facebook. The host, Julie Kintz (“Quantum Leap”), asked if I’d be interested in becoming a BIR host too and referred me to Kim Justus, who is in charge of recruiting new hosts.

Of course, I was interested, but I wondered if I could even do something like this. I told David (my husband), and, surprisingly, he encouraged me. (He usually worries that I’ll take on too much.) I was glad for his encouragement, but I wasn’t convinced yet and threw the idea around with several close friends. They also gave me their “thumbs up.” I agreed to do it!

Then Kim invited me to be a guest on her show (“Recovery Now”) as a Traumatic Brain Injury caregiver. She wanted me to tell an abridged version of David’s and my story of our travels in the TBI maze.

I am featured in the first two hours of Kim’s three-hour show. You can listen by clicking the link below. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

My show, “Another Fork in the Road,” will debut on Monday, August 4, 2014, at 5:00 pm Pacific time. It will air the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. On that show, I will tell a more complete version of our tale based on my book, “Prisoner Without Bars: Conquering Traumatic Brain Injury,” which is searching for a publisher. I hope to see you there.

Subsequent shows will feature interviews with TBI survivors and caregivers and offer brain injury resources and interviews with professionals in the field of TBI. There will also be discussions on current topics of interest.
