Lisabeth Mackall joined other caregivers when her husband and police officer, Frank, was in a serious car accident on the way to an emergency call. The accident left him with a brain injury.

Troop, Juliet Madsen, got her brain injury while serving her country in Iraq. Juliet is a member of the Board of Directors of R4 Alliance and is a master quilter. You can see some of her work at “Stroke of Luck Quilting.”

Losing relationships, both family and friends, is a common result of brain injury and it is devastating to survivors and their caregivers, as well. Troop and survivor, Juliet Madsen, and Lisabeth Mackall, therapist and caregiver for her husband, join me to discuss the topic of “Where Have All My Friends Gone.” We’ll examine the reasons why some people just can’t stick it out and try to shed some light on how folks can keep their relationships alive with their brain-injured friends.

Visger-275x300Former NFL San Fran 49er, George Visger talked about the dangers of football and brain injury. He also discussed hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and Cranial-Sacral therapy, which he believes have helped him.

Cat Brubaker Survivor Panel 070515Cat Brubaker is a two-time traumatic brain injury survivor and the founder of “Hope For Trauma.” Also, in the summer of 2014, Cat rode her recumbent trike Across America (diagonally) to raise awareness for brain injury.

Julie Kintz Survivor Panel 070515When Julie Kintz‘s car went off a cliff in California in 1991, she got a brain injury. Julie is a former Brain Injury Radio Network host.

Juliet Madsen UniformJuliet Madsen has served in the US Army since she was 17-years old. She was involved in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. While serving her country, Juliet suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, at least one stroke, and numerous other medical issues, which changed her life #7 10610754_10203491518354714_4796635925244510505_nforever. On “Another Fork in the Road,” Juliet talked about how she copes with her new life and how she and her family make this new life work for them. I hope you won’t miss her show.

When Jeannette Davidson-Mayer’s husband, DeWayne, had five brain injuries – the result of his active duty in Iraq – Jeannette became his caregiver. To combat this 24-hour job, Jeannette redesigned her kitchen to become the family’s “Central Command Post.”  Jeannette will discuss how she, DeWayne, and their daughter make11023816_10204963754366844_8119135603280691384_n this system work for them.

images-1When I was asked to host my own radio show, my first reaction was disbelief, quickly followed by “Are you kidding?” Being a radio host is something I had never aspired to. It had never crossed my mind. I didn’t have the least idea of how to go about achieving a goal such as that.

I’ve never spoken in front of an adult audience, unless, of course, you count Back-To-School-Night audiences of parents who are dying to meet their child’s new teacher and see what their child will be doing for 6 hours each weekday while under my tutelage. My audiences were always 9 years old and under. They made up my “captive” audiences as I taught them to read, ‘rite, and do ‘rithmetic. (I admit some may have felt they were a “captured” audience.)

After I got over my first feeling of doubt, I let the idea tumble in my brain. I felt flattered, and the seed began to grow. “Why not?” I have a story to tell. I know a LOT about Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). I had already written a book, “Prisoner Without Bars: Conquering Traumatic Brain Injury” (searching for a publisher) about David’s and my life living with his traumatic brain injury, and I write a blog dedicated totally to raising awareness of TBI and helping survivors and caregivers. So, I said, “YES!”

Then came the hours and days of preparation. Yes, I knew my story. It’s never far from my mind, but I wanted the show to be organized and cohesive. When the day of the show arrived, so did the butterflies that were doing a jitterbug in my stomach as the minutes clicked down the clock to showtime. “Your show will start in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 second. You’re ‘On the Air.’” There was a second of dead air time before the Brain Injury Radio logo music began. Then there was no turning back…

“We lived a normal life…until we didn’t….”

I hope you’ll tune into my show the 1st and 3rd Monday evenings of every month. The show airs at 5:00p Pacific time and runs for 90 minutes.
