Andrea Coffey – Survivor of Brain Injury

Andrea Coffey (survivor) … I cooked for the first time today – just something very simple.

I’m kind of proud of myself.  Frozen pesto pasta! I threw some chicken in it.cartoon_chicken22-1

Itty-Bitty GIant Steps for Blog

SPEAK OUT! Itty-Bitty Giant Steps will provide a venue for brain-injury survivors and caregivers to shout out their accomplishments of the week.

If you have an Itty-Bitty Giant Step and you would like to share it, just send an email to me at donnaodonnellfigurski@gmail.com.

If you are on Facebook, you can simply send a Private Message to me. It need only be a sentence or two. I’ll gather the accomplishments and post them with your name on my blog approximately once a week. (If you do not want your last name to be posted, please tell me in your email or Private Message.)

I hope we have millions of Itty-Bitty Giant Steps.

Kathleen Lynx
Survivor of Brain Injury

Kathleen Lynx (survivor) … I just had to crow. It’s been nine years post TBI (traumatic brain injury), and I was able to sew a pair of PJ pants. They were originally going to be capris, but after a few errors, I have sleep pants. I goofed on measuring and had to put in eight inches of side panels so they would fit, but I finished them. It’s the first item I have sewn that fits. Yeah!

Sherrie Crusha (survivor) … I haven’t been able to draw a whole picture since my TBI (traumatic brain injury), 31 years ago. I did my best one yet a couple of days ago.

Jennifer Stokley – Survivor of Brain Injury

Jennifer Stokley (survivor) … I met a stranger at my door who was sent to do “bug home care” (no notice). I let him in to do his work. I asked questions and had him explain things I needed to misc_welcome2know. I have Severe Anxiety Disorder and huge panic attacks.  Strangers are a HUGE trigger; letting them into my home is even bigger! I handled it all – no anxiety; no nothing!

Heather Sivori Floyd & TJ

Brain Injury Survivor, TJ and Mom, Heather Sivori Floyd

Heather Sivori Floyd (caregiver for her son, TJ) … TJ was finally able to get out of the bath on his own! We will always celebrate the little, yet big, milestones because they matter. It matters simply because these moments are the reasons to keep going when it’s very hard. (Keep it up, buddy! You’ll hit those goals because you are determined.) So very proud of him and his never-ending drive to keep going.

Lauren Ziaks

Lauren Ziaks – Brain Injury Survivor

Lauren Ziaks (survivor) … I faced a huge fear today. I wanted to hike a slot canyon, but I was scared of claustrophobia, dizziness/balance issues from recent re-injury, falling etc. But, with (a lot of) help, some positive talk, and a couple of tears of fear at a really steep part, I was able to do Zebra Slot Canyon!8f71e4d8a4fe5b982b90c51e430a75c5

Keep pushing yourself to face your fears and limitations, whatever they are for you. And, lean on those around you for help when you can.

YOU did it!

Congratulations to Lauren!

Donna O’Donnell Figurski – author, caregiver, teacher, actor

Donna O’Donnell Figurski (caregiver) … I’m excited that BrainLine, a major brain-injury organization, accepted my article! It was the first time I published with them. The article, titled “Life Goes On: Finding a Purpose After Brain Injury,” was published on their site Monday.350x350_The_Best_Traumatic_Brain_Injury_Blogs_of_2016_BrainLine

Jennifer Lynn (survivor) … I am legally blind in my right eye due to a relapse post-TBI (traumatic brain injury). Nevertheless, I successfully drove to and from a concert about twenty-five miles away. Originally, a friend was going to drive us, but she found she couldn’t go. I really wanted to see Mandisa for her “Overcomer” song. Mandisa

(It could be the theme song for survivors.) I was able to convince my mom to come with me. race-car-driver-clipart-driving-clip-art1Originally, she was going to drive us back when it became dark. However, when we left the venue, I said I could drive – and I did! All the huzzahs!

David A. Grant – Brain Injury Survivor

David Grant (survivor) It was around two years ago this month that my ability to read returned. Last night, I again fell asleep with a book in my hands. Sure,Mann Reading in Bed my pace is a bit slower, but I’m doing it. Just passed the 300-page mark in an awesome book. (Thanks again, Nick!) I marvel at the fact that I can actually remember a long and complicated plot line, something I was incapable of for years after my accident. How can I not be profoundly grateful?

Note: David is the editor for the e-zine, “TBI Hope & Inspiration.” He is also the author of several books about brain injury. “Metamorphosis, Surviving Brain Injury” and “Slices of Life after Brain Injury
