presented by

Donna O’Donnell Figurski

Itty-Bitty GIant Steps for BlogSPEAK OUT! Itty-Bitty Giant Steps will provide a venue for brain-injury survivors and caregivers to shout out their accomplishments of the week.

If you have an Itty-Bitty Giant Step and you would like to share it, just send an email to me at neelyf@aol.com.

If you are on Facebook, you can simply send a Private Message to me. It need only be a sentence or two. I’ll gather the accomplishments and post them with your name on my blog approximately once a week. (If you do not want your last name to be posted, please tell me in your email or Private Message.)

I hope we have millions of Itty-Bitty Giant Steps.

Here is this week’s Itty-Bitty GIANT Step

David Figurski, PhD – Brain Injury Survivor

David Figurski (survivor) … Because my speech has been affected by partly paralyzed vocal chords and tongue, I was worried that my comments at my father’s funeral Mass would not be understood. On top of that, I was beginning to lose my voice from speaking with so many people the day before at the funeral parlor. But, with Donna’s support as she balanced me, I walked to the podium, and I gave my comments. For ten minutes, I gave them – careful to speak slowly and enunciate every sound.

Several people came up to me afterward and said that they had no problem understanding me. It’s something I had wanted to do to honor my 95-year-old father. I was happy and proud that I did.

  3. Way to go David!! He would be so proud of you, your tribute, and your accomplisments. I know it was not easy. I did the same for my Dad in 2015. I am so sorry, but it will get easier.

    • Charlie, I’m sorry about your Dad. Yes, time does heal – so they say. David’s father lived a good life to 95 years. He was loved and he loved.

  5. David, I am extremely proud of you. Each step you take, word you speak, pedal you push, and blog you edit is a step toward your recovery. When you look back – when we look back, we get to see our progress. I am touched by your courage, your effort to enunciate, during such an emotional time. I understand how challenging that can be from my experience, and your journey has been much more challenging my friend. Celebrate your milestones my dear friend
