David Figurski – pre-brain injury

My husband, David, bought a Catrike 700 in April 2015.  He rides three days each week, 15 miles each day. David loves his trike. Despite not being able to walk outside unassisted because of a balance problem, he feels “normal” when he rides. He has found that people have a lot of curiosity about the trike. People have stopped him to ask questions. One woman talked to him from her car when they were at a Stop sign.

David is excited because he just broke 2,500 miles. But he still has a ways to go before he equals the 5,390 miles ridden by Dan Zimmerman and Catherine Brubaker on their cross-country trek.

David’s cumulative mileage as of 10/13/16               2,580 mi

Miles to reach 5,390* miles                                          2,810 mi

UPDATE:

David’s cumulative mileage as of 09/04/117               3,727 mi

Miles to reach 5,390* miles                                          1,663 mi

*done by both Dan Zimmerman and Catherine Brubaker on their cross-country ride

Hello Donna. I came across your blog. I used to be a postdoc student at Columbia and was familiar with David and his lab, though we didn’t know each other on a personal basis. But I know that his students and everybody else there liked him a great deal. I remember the shockwave that went through the building when we heard of his accident. I’m glad to see that he’s doing so well.

    • Hi Lionel Berthoux,

I was happy that you found my blog and left such a kind message. A lasting shockwave entered our lives when David had his brain injury. He has come a long way from January 2005. He still has a LONG way to go, but we make the most of each day.

Since David’s retirement from Columbia in 2013, his focus (and mine) has been on research of brain injury. Thus I began my blog in 2014. I became a host for the Brain Injury Radio Network. My show is called “Another Fork in the Road.” And, I also do talks about brain injury and have published several articles in brain injury magazines.

As you can see, we are engulfed in all things brain injury. It has opened our world to one we had never thought of before.

This past May we returned to Columbia for David to accept an award called the Distinguished Service Award in Basic Science. He was so honored.

Whose lab were you working in at Columbia? And what are you doing now?

It was so nice of you to contact us. David sends his regards.
